Post-graduate education in agricultural science started in the state in 1961 under the Faculty of Agriculture of Kalyani University in pant pathology and subsequently in 1962. It also started in 7 other subjects viz., Agronomy, Horticulture, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agricultural Chemistry and Soil Science, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Entomology and Animal Husbandry. Later, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, the state-aided-Agricultural University was established in 1974 vide West Bengal Act XLIS of 1974 with the Agriculture Faculty of Kalyani University as the nucleus and Bengal Veterinary College under Calcutta University as the second Faculty. This University has established itself as one of the front-runner Agricultural Universities in the country. Main strength of this University lays on its high quality teaching staff as well as students.

Office of the Dean, Post-Graduate Studies of the University is responsible for all the matters related to post graduate teaching and research programmes, Ph.D. and M.Sc. admission, course work, registration, monitoring, evaluation and award of Ph.D. degrees offered at different departments. The University has both master (M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degree programmes in all the 25 academic departments (16 under the Faculty of Agriculture, 5 under the Faculty of Horticulture and 4 under the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering).

The first Post-graduate regulations of the Viswavidyalaya "Regulations regarding the admission of students to Master's and Doctoral degree programme of the Viswavidyalaya" came in the force with effect from First day of June in 1979. With the course of changing Agricultural education system in the country, number of amendments to these regulations has been made. The Executive Council of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in its 242nd meeting held on March 12, 2019 finally approved the revised regulations namely "Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya Regulations regarding Master degree programme, 2019" and "Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya Regulations regarding admission of students to Doctoral degree programme, 2019" which came into force with effect from first day of April, 2019.

History of the Office:

Dean, Post Graduate Studies co-ordinate all the activities relating to post-graduate studies in the entire Faculty in the University. Dean, Post-Graduate studies is appointed by the Vice- Chancellor of the University from amongst from the preference of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering by term and principals of quotation, in order of sincerity from amongst the preference of the Faculty concern for the period of 3 years.
Dean, Post Graduate Studies is responsibilities for the organization and conduct of Post-Graduate teaching in all the faculties and shall, for the purpose, pass such order as may be necessary.
